Competitions Requiring a Nomination by Chapter

Each Alpha Chi chapter may submit up to two undergraduate nominations (either two scholarships, two fellowships, or one of each) annually. The chapter sponsor will be prompted by email to verify the name of each nominee, select the appropriate competition, and provide the name and email address of the faculty member being asked to provide an assessment of the student’s work. Sponsors: if your student hasn’t requested a nomination by email by February 1, please check in with them and make sure they’re still planning to apply. This is just helpful advice to help keep your students on track; sponsor nominations may be submitted through February 15.

All Applicant Deadline: February 15

  • Gaston/Nolle Scholarships: Alpha Chi will award twelve scholarships for full-time undergraduate study. The two top awards among these will be the Edwin W. Gaston, Jr. Scholarships of $3,000 each, and the remaining ten (10) will be the Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships of $2,000 each. A scholarship nominee must be or have been enrolled in an undergraduate program in the school year 2020-21 and plan to continue full-time undergraduate work in the fall semester of 2021.
  • Sledge/Benedict Fellowships: Alpha Chi will award twelve fellowships for full-time graduate study toward the master’s, doctoral, or professional degree. The two top awards among these will be the Robert W. Sledge Fellowships of $4,000 each, and the remaining ten (10) will be the H. Y. Benedict Fellowships of $3,000 each. A fellowship nominee must be or have been enrolled in an undergraduate program in the school year 2020-21, plan to graduate or have graduated with the baccalaureate degree during this same school year, and plan to begin full-time graduate study in the fall semester of 2021.

Competition Not Requiring Nomination by Chapter

  • Pryor Fellowships: Alpha Chi will award up to two Joseph E. Pryor Fellowships, typically one of $6,000 to a member in a doctoral program who has completed at least two years of graduate or professional study beyond the baccalaureate degree and one of $4,000 to a member for the first or second year of graduate or professional study beyond the baccalaureate degree. This competition is for members of Alpha Chi who have already received their baccalaureate degree at the time of application and who will be enrolled in full-time graduate or professional study in the fall of 2021. Previous winners of the Pryor Fellowship are not eligible. After classes have begun for the fall 2021 semester, a recipient will receive the award after Alpha Chi receives from the college official notification of the student’s full-time enrollment.

If you cannot tell from the criteria above the competition for which you are eligible (one per person), please contact the AX national office for advice by calling 800-477-4225 or emailing office@alphachihonor.org. There is one situation that can make you eligible for two competitions, but we will steer you toward the best fit.
